About Our Community

With 371 available beds, Jefferson Regional Medical Center serves as the major referral center for an 11-county area of South Arkansas with a patient base of approximately 220,000. Our medical staff represents most major specialties and has active teaching programs for medical students and residents as well as students in allied health fields.

Pine Bluff is conveniently located in the mid-south region of Arkansas, and serves as the major trade center for the southeast portion of the state.  The county seat and ninth largest city in Arkansas, Pine Bluff boasts outdoor recreation, attractions, a diverse manufacturing base and warm, friendly people.

This family-oriented county of over 70,000 offers golf, tennis, hunting, fishing, and excellent housing values.   Families enjoy educational programs and exhibits at the Arts & Science Center as well as team sports at the local YMCA.  Pine Bluff also boasts downtown murals depicting the history of Pine Bluff, a historical museum and Arkansas Railroad Museum.  Visit the Pine Bluff Convention and Visitor Bureau website for more information.  For those in the medical field, the community offers all the professional challenges of a "big city" medical center with the atmosphere of a small neighborly community, and is located only 45 minutes south of Little Rock.

Recreational opportunities in Pine Bluff range from water sports and some of the best bass fishing in the state, to golf and tennis.   As host to dozens of bass tournaments each year, Jefferson County’s Regional Park has earned Pine Bluff the nickname of “Bass Capital of the World.”

The Delta Rivers Nature Center is another feature attraction not only for Pine Bluff, but Arkansas.   The facility features hunting and fishing exhibits with dioramas of outdoor activities and collections of hunting, fishing and conservation memorabilia.   An Arkansas Game and Fish Commission facility, the center’s exhibits reveal the natural history of the Delta, while its hiking trails through 130 acres of woodland “bottoms” give visitors a first-hand look at the vegetation and wildlife characteristic of the area.   Among the center’s “living” exhibits are a 20,000-gallon “oxbow lake” aquarium containing native fish species, live snakes, turtles and alligators; and landscaping with wildflowers and other native plants.   Other features include a historical film, and numerous preserved specimens of the Delta’s birds, mammals and fish.   You’ll also find exhibits on the region’s hunting and fishing tradition, the changing nature of Delta rivers and the importance of wetlands.   You will also find a gift shop stocked with nature-related items.

Pine Bluff has four public school districts, a magnet elementary school and numerous private schools.   The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is the second oldest public institution in the state of Arkansas, and the oldest with a black heritage.   It maintains one of the nation's few aquaculture research programs and the only one in the state of Arkansas.   Southeast Arkansas College features technical career programs as well as a 2-year college curriculum.

Agriculture is a mainstay in Pine Bluff. Jefferson County is located in the heart of a rich agricultural area deep in the Arkansas River Basin.  The leading products include cotton, soybeans, cattle, rice, poultry, timber and catfish. Principle industries in the area are engaged in processing cotton, production of cottonseed oil, paper and wood products, the manufacture of wire products, poultry processing, the manufacture of electric transformers and metal fabrication.  Major employers are Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Tyson Foods, Simmons Bank, Central Moloney, International Paper, the Pine Bluff Arsenal and Union Pacific Railroad.
