Area Health Education Center (AHEC)
4010 Mulberry
Pine Bluff, Arkansas
H. Marks Attwood, M.D., Director
(870) 541-7611

The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) was established by JRMC and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in 1973, the first of six AHEC programs in the state. AHEC – Pine Bluff offers an outstanding three-year residency training program for family physicians. Senior medical students from UAMS and out of state schools complete rotations of four to eight weeks, with clinical faculty members in private practice serving as physicians/teachers. The JRMC Family Practice Center provides clerkships to introduce junior medical students to family practice through this learning experience. AHEC also provides many hours of continuing medical education for physicians and other healthcare professionals, and the Melville Library offers comprehensive library services to the area.

Clinical Pastoral Education
1600 West 40th Avenue
Pine Bluff, Arkansas
Kofi Adzaku, CPE Supervisor
(870) 541-7167

The JRMC Clinical Pastoral Education program is accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE). It is currently the only accredited program in the State of Arkansas for pastoral care and chaplaincy training.

“Clinical Pastoral Education is theological and professional education for ministry. In CPE, theological students, ordained clergy, members of religious orders and qualified laypeople minister to people in crisis situations while being supervised. Out of intense involvement with supervisors, other students, people in crisis, and other professionals, CPE students are challenged to improve the quality of their pastoral relationships. Through pastoral practice, written case studies and verbatim, individual supervision, seminar participation, and relevant reading, students are encouraged to develop genuine caring pastoral relationships. Through viewing complicated life situations from different viewpoints, students are able to gain new insights and understandings about the human situation. Theological reflection is important in CPE as pastoral people seek ways to integrate theology with life experience.”
- ACPE

The CPE methodology is an action/reflection process of theological education grounded in a person-centered approach to spiritual ministry. JRMC's CPE program includes summer Chaplain Interns and yearl-long Chaplain Residents. As a member of an interdisciplinary healthcare team, the student's educational experience involves providing spiritual care to patients, families and staff and offers an opportunity for specialized training in several areas of healthcare ministry. Residency training meets requirement for eligibility for Board Certification by the Association for Professional Chaplains.

Summer Program: 12-week full-time intensive program, June - August.  (Fees).

Residency Program:
