A New Start for the New Year!
Getting healthier is the most common New Year’s resolution, but it’s also usually forgotten after a month of so. Talking about the end result is exciting, motivating and fun – but when the goal is to live a healthy lifestyle, that requires permanent, daily change. This year, we want to help you achieve your goals by offering tips and resources for getting and staying healthy.
Get Fit at the Wellness Center
You don’t have to spend hours going nowhere on a treadmill to improve your health at the Wellness Center (although you can if you want to)! There is something for everyone, regardless of your fitness level, ranging from cardio to floor machines to group classes. New in January is a Functional Fitness space on the patio at the Pine Bluff facility, that exercises muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time and improves core stability. Also new in January is the latest Les Mills class called Grit. It’s a 30-minute, high intensity class, but there are options to modify the program for participants who are not ready for the most strenuous moves. Grit classes will be held at both the Pine Bluff and White Hall facilities. For more information, call 870-541-7890 or 870-850-8000.
Balloon Weight Loss Intervention
JRMC Gastroenterologist, Meer Akbar Ali, M.D., is now offering a managed weight loss system for patients with a BMI of 30-40. The two-part, non-surgical program starts with placing a gastric balloon in the stomach. Once the balloon is in place, the patient receives an individually tailored support program from a team of weight loss experts, including dieticians. After six months, the balloon is removed. The program is designed to help the patient develop sustainable, healthy habits that will keep the weight off over time. For more information, call 870-541-7201 and speak with Cindy Sutliff.
Weight Watchers
There are more than one million active Weight Watchers members around the world, and JRMC is pleased to have one of the groups meeting at our Pine Bluff facility! Weight Watchers has been in existence for 50 years and remains one of the most reliable weight-loss plans around. They are constantly updating their plan and offering more options for today’s busy lifestyle, including online help and mobile information, as well as weekly gatherings like the one at the Wellness Center. For more information, call 870-541-7890.
DEEP Diabetes Class
Getting healthy isn’t always just about losing weight and exercising. If you have diabetes, it’s both of those things and more. DEEP (Diabetes Empowerment Education Program) is a six-week JRMC class with a focus on the unique issues facing people with diabetes. Participants will learn how the disease affects the body, how to monitor and understand blood sugar numbers, and how to shop and cook in a healthier way. For more information on DEEP, contact Lisa Duke at 870-541-7195.
