The Hidden Heroes: Your In-House Pathology Team at Jefferson Regional

When you think about hospital care, your mind likely goes to doctors, nurses, and surgeons. But behind the scenes, an expert team works tirelessly to provide crucial answers that guide your treatment. At Jefferson Regional, we are proud to have an exceptional in-house pathology department, a specialized service that brings a higher level of care to our community in southeast Arkansas.
This dedicated team acts as a vital consulting resource for your other physicians, providing the diagnostic foundation for your health journey. From real-time cancer diagnoses during surgery to detailed cellular analysis, our pathologists and technicians are the hidden heroes ensuring you receive the most accurate and timely care possible, right here at home.
Who are Pathologists?
Think of a pathologist as a doctor’s doctor. They are expert physicians who diagnose diseases by examining tissues, cells, and body fluids. When a surgeon removes a suspicious growth or a pulmonologist takes a biopsy, those samples go to the pathology department. There, our specialists analyze them under a microscope to determine exactly what is happening inside your body.
Their findings are essential for guiding treatment. Surgeons rely on their analysis to ensure they have removed all cancerous tissue, and oncologists depend on their reports to create effective cancer treatment plans. At Jefferson Regional, we are fortunate to have two outstanding surgical and clinical pathologists on our staff: Dr. Julie Harris and Dr. Kari Hooper.

Dr. Hooper brings an even more specialized skill set to our community, as she is also a board-certified hematopathologist and cytopathologist. This means she has advanced training in diagnosing diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs, as well as diseases at the cellular level. Having this level of expertise in-house is a unique advantage for our patients and the 11 counties we serve.
Real-Time Answers When They Matter Most
One of the greatest benefits of having an on-site pathology department is the ability to get answers quickly, sometimes even while a procedure is still in progress.
Imagine a pulmonologist performing an EBUS (endobronchial ultrasound), a procedure that uses a scope to view and biopsy tissues deep within the chest. As samples are collected, they are immediately passed to our pathology team. On-site cytotechnologists—lab professionals with bachelor’s degrees and specialized certification—prepare and screen the slides. If they spot potential signs of malignancy, they alert Dr. Harris or Dr. Hooper, who can provide a rapid diagnosis on the spot. This real-time analysis helps doctors make immediate decisions, provides patients with faster answers, and determines if more complex molecular testing is needed.
This speed is also critical during surgery. Our hospital has a special laboratory room located just off the main surgery suite. If a surgeon discovers an unexpected mass, a sample is sent directly to this room. While the patient is still under anesthesia, our pathology team can examine the tissue and provide a diagnosis within minutes. This immediate feedback helps the surgeon make the best possible decisions during the operation.
The Skilled Team Behind the Slides
The work of our pathologists is supported by a brilliant team of highly trained laboratory professionals. Every sample, or specimen, begins a careful journey handled by experts.
Specially trained histotechs transport specimens from surgery and other departments to the lab. These professionals, who hold associate degrees and advanced certification, are experts in preparing tissue for examination. They embed the samples in paraffin wax blocks, slice them into incredibly thin sections, and carefully place them on microscope slides. The slides are then stained with special dyes that highlight different cellular structures, making them ready for the pathologists to review. Every morning by 8 a.m., these trays of meticulously prepared slides are ready for examination.
Our cytotechs, now often called cytologists, are equally vital. They are experts in examining individual cells to detect abnormalities, playing a key role in screening for cancer and other diseases from samples like fluid collections or fine-needle aspirations.

The entire department operates seamlessly under the guidance of our lab manager, Elizabeth Whitaker. Elizabeth holds a BS degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences and is a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist through the American Society for Clinical Pathology – MLS (ASCP). Additionally, she has earned an MBA with an emphasis in Healthcare Administration. Her expertise and leadership ensure that every specimen is managed with the utmost precision and care, driving the team to consistently deliver excellence.
Collaboration is Key: The Tumor Board
Effective cancer care requires a team effort. At Jefferson Regional, our pathologists are integral members of our Tumor Board. This is a multidisciplinary conference where oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, and pathologists gather to discuss complex cancer cases.
During these meetings, the pathologist presents the detailed findings from the tissue samples, explaining the specific type and characteristics of the cancer. This information is crucial for the entire team to collectively plan the most effective and personalized treatment strategy for each patient. This collaborative approach, made possible by having community pathologists in-house, ensures that our patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists.
A Commitment to Our Community
Our pathology team takes its responsibility to heart. They understand that patients don’t get to choose their pathologist, so they view their role as a sacred trust. As Dr. Hooper explains, she never takes for granted that every day she is “entrusted to be a good steward of a patient’s tissue.”
Having this level of diagnostic expertise available right here in Pine Bluff means you don’t have to travel far for world-class care. It means faster diagnoses, more coordinated treatment, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing a dedicated team of experts is working together for you. The Jefferson Regional pathology department is a powerful resource for our community and a cornerstone of the excellent care you deserve.
